    fall candle makeover

So I went a little overboard when I bought 8 fall candles on sale at Michael’s.  I burned a candle nearly every night for a few months and still only managed to put a dent in 3 of these candles.  With our upcoming move next summer, I don’t think it is too reasonable to expect to travel with candles to the next city we call home, but I didn’t want them to go to waste either. Solution?  Make them over for the holiday season!     I took a combination of felt, plaid fabric, twine, ribbon, tree trimmings, jingle bells and mini ornaments to turn these orange jar candles into…

    p e a c e

“Let there be peace on Earth And let it begin with me.”  -Vince Gill I posted a while back about the Chicago Cubs representing a new found belief in miracles and hope. And then I had a really rough couple of weeks. Nothing bad happened that I can put my finger on, except that our hope that we conceived a “World Series baby” was dashed by a single pink line in mid November. Tony was there this time when I tested and had nothing but optimism and compassion for me when the tears came. I thought a lot about gratitude over Thanksgiving week. I felt so blessed to be able…

thanksgiving craft: utensil & napkin holders

I made these last year in preparation for hosting the first Thanksgiving with both of our families.  My mom and sister found an amazing deal on flights at the last minute and decided to join the Cunningham clan for Turkey weekend.  I think I excitedly crafted these soon after hearing of their impending arrival.   Growing up, my mom hosted the main holiday dinners.  The food: delicious.  The ambiance: fantastic. The table settings: amaze-balls.  Her father was an interior designer, and my grandmother had an eye for painstaking perfection, so my mom learned from the best.    Thanksgiving was my favorite holiday growing up because it meant having the whole weekend…

    love. one. another

Talk about the ultimate high of watching the Chicago Cubs win their first World Series since 1908- to the ultimate low of “Election 2016.”  Whatever your political views- this was an election day/week/month that will go down in history as being one of the most notorious elections of all time.   I am not here to write about my own political views, or open up the floor to hear any of yours.  There are plenty of social media platforms in which to do so. The bottom line across America this week has been devastation. There has never been so much rage, palpated through computer screens, text messaging, and TV, or…

    believe it

I wanted to write this post during the middle of the post-season playoffs, but I found myself too nervous to jinx the Cubs’ chances of making history!  I grew up watching the Cubbies and was lucky enough to make it to a few games at the magical “friendly confines” of Wrigley Field before we moved to Texas in 2001. My grandfather was a huge Cubs fan, and I remember spending hours in front of the TV with my grandpa and my dad, learning all there is to know about baseball.  Some people find baseball tiresome to watch, but there was something about the Cubs that kept me, and millions of…

baby shower: gender neutral animal safari theme

A close friend and her very sweet husband are due soon. A + A are waiting to find out the gender, and have a neutral color palate safari themed nursery waiting for baby.    They not only traveled to Africa on a safari excursion within the last couple of years, but actually lived in South Africa right around the time they got married.  They are very adventurous people, and I have no doubt that they will make amazing parents!  I contacted the father to be and had him send me photos from their safari trip to use as inspiration, and loved them!   I really wanted a color to accent…

    let’s talk about the fear

I’ve learned in these past months that if you try ignore an emotion, feeling or thought, it comes back around in full force. Science tells us that anxiety triggers a release of stress hormone, called cortisol which raises blood pressure, heart rate and sometimes releases adrenaline. When you try ignore a scary thought or reality, your brain sends another message to your stress response system and sends out a stronger wave of cortisol in the attempt to get you to pay attention. Ignore it again, and you will face a stronger wave and so on. This is how a worrisome thought can lead to a panic attack. I’ve had my moments…

    there are no words

There are no words, but I will try. The feelings that I had upon making my private struggle public, left me speechless.  Last Saturday I hit “post” and “share” and immediately felt a wave of emotions overcome me.  I felt sick to my stomach, dizzy, shaky and hung on tight as a roller coaster of adrenaline swept over me. Back when I started writing for my own healing and understanding, I had always planned on sharing my blog eventually through Instagram.  I wanted to help my family and friends understand my point of view.  Instagram is my social media of choice nowadays, but Facebook is another story. When Facebook first came out when…

October 15th, Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day

“How very quietly you tiptoed into our world, silently, only a moment you stayed. But what an imprint your footprints have left upon our hearts.”  -Unknown. This post is dedicated to all parents who have experienced the earth-shattering heartache that is pregnancy and infant loss,  to the millions of women who are longing to hold a “rainbow baby” in their arms, to the couples who struggle to find peace and understanding within their relationship after loss, and to those tiny little babies who leave this world much too soon.    I am opening up today to bring awareness to this often silent grief that plagues so many women.   I…

    fall decorating

Fall is my favorite season.  I love wearing sundresses and wedges as much as the next girl, but by the end of summer, I’m ready to throw on that blanket scarf and cozy up with a hot chocolate.   Not much beats the scent of fall candles burning, the wisp of a crisp breeze across the room from the open windows, and the warmth of a Pippa curled up on my lap. (see below.)  Speaking of candles, I was lucky enough to go to Michael’s on a whim and hit the jackpot! 4 for $10 for Fall scented candles.  I bought 8. I get almost as excited to decorate for…
