thanksgiving craft: utensil & napkin holders

I made these last year in preparation for hosting the first Thanksgiving with both of our families.  My mom and sister found an amazing deal on flights at the last minute and decided to join the Cunningham clan for Turkey weekend.  I think I excitedly crafted these soon after hearing of their impending arrival.   Growing up, my mom hosted the main holiday dinners.  The food: delicious.  The ambiance: fantastic. The table settings: amaze-balls.  Her father was an interior designer, and my grandmother had an eye for painstaking perfection, so my mom learned from the best.    Thanksgiving was my favorite holiday growing up because it meant having the whole weekend with my family- a whole weekend that started in turkey and mashed potato goodness and ended in an explosion of Christmas decorating, music playing, and movie watching.  “Tree day,” is what we called the day after Thanksgiving and it is still my favorite day of the year.

So back to the craft…

Supplies:  All bought at Hobby Lobby!

  1. Roll of 5 3/4″ burlap ribbon (any width works -it just dictates the height of your napkin holders)
  2. Roll of ribbon for decorative tie
  3. Leaf cupcake toppers
  4. Skinny Sharpie
  5. Scissors
  6. Hot glue/Glue gun

Notes:  I love using a ribbon roll because it means that two of the ends already have sealed edges! It cuts down on the number of cuts you need to make for this craft.  I found one with gold shimmer in it- bonus! Make sure to use your 40% off coupon from hobbylobby.com if you buy during a week where the ribbon is full price.  **** Ribbons by the roll are 50% off this week! **** You will have also have a lot left over for future crafting.  I left these napkin holders neutral and did not glue the decorative bow or the cupcake toppers in place so I could switch them out for different holidays and occasions.  Cupcake toppers?  Yep, you read that right.  I found them in the fall section at HL and thought they would be perfect for this.

Steps:

Cut 7.5″ piece from burlap roll.

Take two shorter ends and hot glue together.  Use a ruler or plastic butter knife to place between two layers of burlap so not to glue them together.

You should now have a tube.  Take one of the open ends and hot glue it closed, forming a pocket.

Cut a piece of your decorate ribbon at least 12 inches long (12 inches will make you the decorative knot as pictured.  If you desire a full bow, cut at least 15 inches.
